How do I clean my piercing?
Use a sterile saline spray twice daily (front and back). Do not use alcohol, peroxide, or ointments as they irritate the wound.
Should I turn my jewelry?
No. Rotating jewelry breaks healing tissue and introduces bacteria.
How long does it take to heal?
Earlobe: 6–8 weeks. Cartilage/Nose: 4–12 months. Navel/Nipple: 6–12+ months.
When can I change my jewelry?
Wait until the piercing is fully healed, which may take months. A professional piercer can help downsize it sooner.
Does it hurt?
Most clients describe it as a quick, sharp pinch that subsides quickly.
Is it safe?
Yes, when done by a professional using sterile equipment, such as an autoclave.
Can I bring my own jewelry?
Often no; shops require verifying that jewelry is high-quality, implant-grade (titanium or gold).
What if it is red?
Redness and light swelling are normal initially, but excessive swelling or yellow/green discharge indicates an infection
Can I swim?
Avoid pools, lakes, and hot tubs until fully healed, as they carry risks of infection and chemical irritation.
Can I sleep on it?
No, avoid sleeping on new piercings (especially cartilage) to prevent migration or scarring.
Can I get pierced while pregnant?
No. It is recommended to wait, as your immune system is occupied, and healing is much slower.
How old do I have to be?
Typically 18, or with parental consent (varies by location). Ethereal Piercing require ID (Typically photo ID for both parent and minor, along with a birth certificate.)

The most common type of metal I use for starter jewelry is going to be implant grade titanium. I do carry and can use other metals as well, such as 14k gold, platinum (preorder on request), niobium, and implant grade steel (more on this further down). I also carry 18k gold jewelry, however it is much softer than 14k and so it isn’t suitable for starter jewelry.
Surgical steel is a very broad designation for jewelry that may or may not be alloyed with other metals that can cause allergic reactions in a lot of the population. There are only a few biocompatible options for steel, which are generally referred to as Implant grade (ASTM F-138 compliant or ISO 5832-1, ISO 10993-(6,10,or 11) compliant). Many of the “surgical steel” options for body jewelry do not meet these standards and I prefer not to take any chances with my clients well being.
Threadless jewelry and internally threaded jewelry are going to do less overall damage during insertion and removal as well as be better quality options.
While there are cases where I would say yes, for the majority of clients our first goal is to get a piercing to heal and the big extravagant pieces of jewelry aren’t usually the best choice for healing purposes. I promise I want to put the show stopping jewelry in your piercings and help you bring your dreams to life…. However, I want you to have a well healed piercing first and foremost!
